Chickpea protein start-up expands into Asia-Pacific region with new office and business development hire

Israel-based foodtech start-up ChickP Protein has opened a new office in Singapore to cater to the growing demand for plant-based products in the region.

ChickP Protein’s expansion into Asia-Pacific is supported by the appointment of new business development director of Asia Moy Teo who will lead business development and marketing efforts in the region.

Teo has joined the company with 20 years of experience in the food and beverage industry, following the recent sale of her distribution business.

The start-up will also establish a warehouse as part of the new business arm, to alleviate supply issues brought about by Covid-19.

“Asia is an important market for ChickP [as] we already partner with local food companies to advance plant-based innovations,” said Itay Dana VP of sales and business development at ChickP.

“This move is part of ChickP’s global extension beyond the joint market development agreement with Socius Ingredients in the US.

“We also signed a contract with a distributor in South Africa with the next step in the European market,” Dana added.

Moy said: “I’m excited to start this journey with ChickP in the alt-protein ingredient segment.

“Chickpea is a well-known and highly venerated crop in Asia and the region makes up more than 85% of chickpea consumption globally, only behind India,” she added.

ChickP Protein was founded in 2016 and produces a chickpea isolate with 90% protein content.
